How many flowers must bees visit to make a pound of honey?

You can find out the answer by visiting the Camp Illinek Apiary.

To educate Scouts about the importance of honeybees, and with help from the Family Beekeepers of Illinois, your Pack or Troop can come out to Camp Illinek and learn about bees.

Using a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience, youth get up close and personal with the insects, donning beekeeper suits and interacting with a buzzing hive.

Learn about pollination, pheromones, the different bees in the colony, round and waggle dances, nest arrangement, and swarming.

One-third of our global food supply is pollinated by bees so it is important to teach youth about bees so they can appreciate them, and also so they won't be afraid of them. This is also part of the Gardening Merit Badge. Contact Wayne Beck or Mark Wilson to set up a visit.
